All Stars Unlimited
In 2002, a long-time family friend Krystal and her business partner Neissa came to me to help them develop an identity for their new gymnastics business. The identity had to appeal to parents of children from toddlers to teens and be gender-neutral. We strove for something that had the energy of athletics with an informality that would lend itself to applications involving young children. A strong, deep red was chosen as the primary color with grays and black to accent. Stars were clearly the strongest graphic element. Typography was relaxed to bring a less formal element to the design.
As the business got underway and became successful, I undertook the job of team photographer, setting up a portable studio at the gym on picture days. Team and individual photos were customized to include a frame featuring the logo and the team and/or individual’s name.
Part of the All Stars Unlimited program is to offer gymnastics-themed birthday parties. Parents are given invitations in the form of postcards that they can send to their invitees. The cards had to carry areas for the parent to fill in (time, date, etc.), but provide standard information like the address of the gym and what to wear. The back of the postcard was designed explicitly to allow for a standard mailing label to cover the address of the gym should it change in the future, thereby saving on the potential cost of reordering the postcards.
Each year a new t-shirt was designed for the students and coaches to wear. And special summer-themed t-shirts were created for summer camps.
To support public performances and trade-show appearances, a large (9 ft. x 3 ft.) vinyl banner and informational poster (16 in. x 20 in.) were developed. The banner can be hung when feasible, or simply laid on the floor when the team is performing in a venue such as a basketball game. The poster is usually supported by an easel and explains the All Stars Unlimited philosophy and approach to non-competitive gymnastics.
